CCTV control room UPS with lithium batteries

A control room is the most power-sensitive part of any CCTV system: lose the mains and recording and access control fail together. We fitted a UPS and lithium battery pack to keep the console and its core equipment running.

This console already runs the whole building's security, so the aim was simple: a power cut should not take it offline.

Configuration: 1 × UPS unit + 1 × LiFePO4 battery pack

The challenge

The console carries the recording servers, the access control system and the intercom at the same time. On previous outages the recording stopped and left a gap in the timeline, and the door controllers dropped out so staff had to open doors by hand. The client wanted the console to stay up rather than be managed around after every cut.

What we did

We installed a UPS unit with a LiFePO4 battery pack for the console equipment, covering the recording servers, the door controllers and the network switches. While we were on site we tidied the cabinet distribution and moved non-essential loads — printers, fans and the like — off the UPS circuit, so they were not drawing on backup capacity they did not need.

The result

Recording now continues through an outage and access control keeps working, so staff can run the building normally until the mains returns. Because the non-essential loads were removed, the measured runtime came out longer than the original design.
