APC / Schneider Electric UPS

The most common name in small and mid-range backup — and the one we supply when a site standard or an existing installed base calls for it.

Where APC makes sense

APC has the highest penetration of any brand in Hong Kong's small-office market, and three practical benefits follow:

  • Accessories and consumables are easy to get. Battery packs, network cards and rack kits are stocked widely — you will not be stuck hunting for a part.
  • Model numbers are readable. The number roughly is the VA rating, which makes ordering and cross-checking quotes simpler.
  • Retail and project channels coexist. Small models circulate widely, so a genuine urgent replacement can usually be sourced the same week.

The limit is just as clear: APC is thin in the large and three-phase range. For a room with three-phase supply and tens of kVA of load, EATON or a Chinese three-phase line is usually the better conversation.

The series people mix up

  • Back-UPS — standby or line-interactive depending on the model. Same name, two architectures, very different protection. Always check the specific model.
  • Smart-UPS — line-interactive, tower or rack form factor.
  • Smart-UPS RT / SRT — online double-conversion, rack-mounted, accepts external battery packs to extend runtime.

The most common mistake we see is ordering "an APC" without the model number. At the same VA rating, a standby unit and a line-interactive unit differ sharply in price and protection — buying the wrong one is money spent twice.

When to choose APC

  • Load within ~3 kVA — computers, network gear, POS, surveillance
  • Rented premises that may be vacated — tower units move more easily than rack builds
  • Short lead time matters
  • No dedicated IT staff — the interfaces and alerts are straightforward

Runtime comes from the battery pack

Most APC models accept external packs — the Smart-UPS RT/SRT 192 V rack battery pack being the common one. The same host with one pack or two differs by a multiple in runtime. Plan the cabinet space, floor loading, ventilation and whether the battery swap needs downtime — we size all of it against a measured load before quoting. That step matters more than the brand on the box.
