Vehicle-mounted lithium battery UPS
A communications vehicle often works where there is no mains supply at all. Its on-board UPS has to cope with vibration and heat, and the lithium option keeps the vehicle weight down.
This vehicle works in the field, away from any fixed mains supply, so its backup power has to survive the road as well as the load.
Configuration: 1 × vehicle-mounted lithium (LiFePO4) UPS
The challenge
Out in the field the vehicle runs off its own generator or batteries. Vibration while moving and heat from direct sun both take a toll on the battery pack and the wiring, and every kilogram added to the vehicle eats into fuel economy and payload.
What we did
We used a LiFePO4 battery UPS, which is lighter than a lead-acid equivalent and has a longer cycle life. The installation included anti-vibration mounts and shake-proof terminals, with the cable runs fixed clear of hot and exhaust areas. The pack has BMS protection and a low-voltage alarm.
The result
The vehicle now supplies stable power both on the move and when parked, the connections have stayed reliable under long-term vibration, and the condition of the battery can be seen at a glance.
