Mobile rack server backup power
A mobile rack is tight on both space and load capacity. A compact UPS and lithium battery pack provided backup power without adding weight or upsetting the balance of the rack.
This rack has to be moved, which changes the rules for everything installed inside it.
Configuration: 1 × UPS unit + 1 × LiFePO4 battery pack
The challenge
The rack is wheeled from place to place, so weight and centre of gravity matter. Inside, the space also had to hold the servers, the switch and the distribution, which left very little room for batteries.
What we did
We replaced what would have been lead-acid batteries with a LiFePO4 pack, cutting both weight and volume for the same backup capacity. The UPS unit and the battery pack were mounted on separate levels to keep the centre of gravity low, with retaining brackets so nothing shifts when the rack is pushed.
The result
The rack now has backup power fitted inside it, with the overall weight under control and stable to move. The internal cabling and the spacing between equipment also meet the cooling requirements.
