Battery UPS for an SMT production line
A momentary break on an SMT line scraps the boards being placed and forces recalibration and trial runs afterwards. This installation was sized to ride through the break rather than to keep the line running for hours.
On an SMT line, the damage is done in the first fraction of a second, so protection has to act faster than any generator can.
Configuration: Battery UPS
The challenge
A momentary loss of power on an SMT line scraps the boards that are being placed, and restarting means recalibrating the equipment and running trial boards before production can resume — a loss far larger than the cost of the electricity involved. The line also runs warm, so the batteries have to tolerate a higher ambient temperature than in a typical office.
What we did
We fitted a battery UPS to the placement machines and their control equipment. The requirement here was riding through an instantaneous break, not running the line for hours, so the sizing work focused on the start-up inrush current and the line's real load profile rather than on maximum runtime. The unit was also positioned where air movement is better, since battery life in a warm production area depends heavily on that.
The result
Voltage dips and brief outages no longer stop the line, and the scrap rate on work in progress has come down. The maintenance plan now sets battery replacement intervals against the measured ambient temperature rather than a fixed calendar.
