Battery UPS for a technology company machine room

The customer was weighing up-front cost against the cost of replacing batteries later. The answer was to decide first what genuinely needed backup, then standardise the batteries so that replacement becomes a routine job.

In an office machine room, the useful design decision is not which battery chemistry to buy but which loads deserve backup at all.

Configuration: Battery UPS

The challenge

The customer was weighing initial investment against long-term maintenance cost. A fully lithium-based scheme carried a higher up-front price, while a conventional layout raised the risk that replacing the batteries later would be awkward and disruptive. Neither option worked on its own.

What we did

We designed around load tiers: core equipment is protected by the UPS, while non-critical equipment was deliberately left off the backup circuit so that it does not consume capacity. The batteries are standard-specification lead-acid packs, and we allowed for a replacement route and a simple record sheet, so that a full battery change in a few years is a planned job rather than a redesign.

The result

Initial cost stayed within budget, and battery replacement is now a standardised procedure that the existing maintenance contract can cover.
