40 kVA lithium battery UPS for a telecoms machine room

The battery room was close to full and the lead-acid cells were failing early in the heat. A 40 kVA online UPS with a lithium bank met the design runtime without extending the room.

Space in the battery room, not budget, was the limit that shaped this design.

Configuration: 1 × 40 kVA online UPS + lithium battery bank

The challenge

The room's backup had previously been provided by lead-acid batteries, but the battery room was close to full, and at high ambient temperatures lead-acid life shortens markedly — replacement had become a frequent event. The customer wanted a longer runtime without extending the battery room.

What we did

We used a 40 kVA online UPS with a lithium battery bank. Lithium has a much higher energy density, so the same capacity takes up substantially less floor area, and it tolerates heat better than lead-acid with a longer cycle life. As part of the design we checked the room's cooling and its distribution capacity, and we added monitoring so the condition of the bank can be seen rather than assumed.

The result

The design runtime was reached within the existing battery room, with no extension needed. The expected replacement cycle is longer, which brings the lifetime cost of the battery system down.

If your battery room is running out of space or your lead-acid set keeps failing, contact us and we will assess a lithium replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lithium battery bank suitable for a high-power machine room?
The deciding factor is the battery management system rather than the chemistry alone. A compliant BMS provides overcharge, over-discharge, over-temperature and short-circuit protection, and the room needs appropriate cooling and fire provisions to match. With those conditions met, lithium battery banks are already widely used in telecoms rooms.
