Schools and education institutions
A campus protects more than its servers. Backup power here has to hold administration and teaching systems together, keep the safety and communication equipment alive, and still be safe around students.
How one outage spreads through a campus
Schools and education institutions carry a more mixed load than an ordinary office. Administrative and teaching IT sit on one side, safety and building systems on the other, and on top of that there is the equipment that must keep working during an evacuation. A single power cut can take down student records and administration systems, classroom multimedia, networks and Wi-Fi coverage, door access and CCTV, and fire and emergency-lighting equipment at the same time.
A layered approach
- Critical layer (must not drop) — servers, the network core, access control and CCTV, emergency broadcast and communications. These get a UPS sized for real runtime.
- Important layer (safe shutdown) — administrative PCs and multimedia teaching equipment. A small UPS is enough to close them down properly and avoid damage.
- General layer — ordinary lighting and non-critical sockets. Usually not worth putting on a UPS, which would otherwise drive capacity and cost out of control.
This layering puts a limited budget where it actually protects safety and operations.
Extra considerations on a campus
- Safety — batteries and equipment must sit out of reach of students and meet fire and escape-route requirements.
- Holiday works — long breaks are the best window for installation and battery replacement; we schedule around the school calendar.
- Multiple blocks — separate blocks and floors can be fitted point by point rather than in one project.
- Budget by year — battery replacement can be planned ahead so it does not collide with other spending.
