APC Back-UPS entry-level range

One of the most widely sold entry-level UPS families in the market. Many models, wide price spread — choosing the right model matters more than choosing the brand.

Three traps in this tier

Trap one: assuming the same brand and capacity means the same thing. The Back-UPS family spans several architectures — standby and line-interactive — and the output waveform is not consistent across it. The architecture behind the model number affects real-world behaviour more than the capacity figure does.

Trap two: ignoring socket and voltage specification. Some models are designed for a particular region, with different socket types and input voltages. Discovering that at the wall is the most avoidable and most common mistake.

Trap three: putting an entry-level unit in front of high-end equipment. Servers, storage and precision instruments belong on a line-interactive or better, pure sine wave unit. An entry-level model in the right place is a good investment; in the wrong place it is decoration.

Ask first — it is cheaper than buying twice

We supply this APC tier and the EATON range alongside it. We do not push one over the other; the answer depends on what you are connecting. Send us the equipment list — or a photograph of the rating plate — and we will come back with:

  • A recommended model and the reason for it
  • An estimated runtime
  • Whatever is needed to go with it (comms cable, monitoring software, extension leads)

If what you need is server and cabinet-grade protection, look at APC Smart-UPS RT or EATON 9PX instead.

Key features

  • Models from 650 VA to over 1000 VA, covering different load sizes
  • Basic surge protection and battery backup
  • Small and easy to source, suited to protecting a single machine
  • Some models offer USB communications with software for automatic shutdown
  • Suits workstations, network gear and light surveillance

Where it fits

An office workstation

Short ride-through for one or a few machines, so a trip does not cost unsaved work.

Network and surveillance gear

Routers, switches and recorders stay up, keeping the link and the recording continuous.

Retail POS

The till host rides through a trip, so a sale is not interrupted.

Frequently asked questions

BK650M2 or BX1100CI — how do I choose?
Start from the capacity the load needs, then the output waveform, then the socket type. The two differ in both capacity and architecture, so a bigger model number does not automatically mean the right choice. Send us the list of equipment and we will tell you which one fits, and roughly how long it will run.
Why does the output waveform matter so much?
Because it is the most common practical failure. A stepped (simulated sine wave) output feeding an active PFC supply can produce audible noise, overheating, or a failure to transfer at all. Most current PCs and network gear use active PFC supplies, so this has to be checked model by model — never assume pure sine wave.
Will these sockets take Hong Kong plugs?
Some APC models are built to a regional specification with different socket types and voltages. This is another thing to confirm before purchase. We recommend the model that matches your site, rather than the one that is easiest to source.
